Deerfield Beach
In the early 1900's when the railroad tracks bisecting Deerfield were bordered on both sides by pineapple patches, train passengers did a double take. As soon as the train stopped to take on water, some leaped off to snatch the exotic fruit. Today, the pineapples are no more, and Deerfield Beach is a thriving coastal city. Although primarily an agricultural village until the late 1940's, now Deerfield Beach is considered a tourist Mecca and in the Year 2000 received the Blue Wave award for one of the most pristine beaches in the State of Florida.
Phenomenal growth and prosperity has marked the last few years in Deerfield Beach. In 1898 there were just 20 settlers, in 1960 5,753 residents lived in our community and today in the Year 2002 we have over 60,000 people. We have 30,000 males and 34,000 females. There are over 11,000 children under the age of 19 and 19,000 people over the age of 65; median age 44.5. In Deerfield Beach 51.1% of residents live in family households and 48.9% live in non-family households. There are 37,343 housing units; 22,029 are owner occupies and 9,363 units are rented. We have over 5,000 businesses ranging from small "mom & pop" retailers, to major nationwide corporations.
We are experiencing a gentrification of the Eastern area of our City and have watched single-family home prices escalate from the mid $70,000 range to between $200,000 and up. We are upgrading our roads, installing new sewers, and improving our landscaping. We are revitalizing our business districts and building new restaurants and upscale residential communities in and around our beach area. We have increased our fire rescue and police force and offer many special transportation services to our elderly and poor.
Our Parks and Recreation services are some of the very best in South Florida. We have beautiful, well-maintained parks, boat ramps, tennis courts, and playgrounds. We have weekly dancing on the beach, live entertainment during the summer, several special events, and a host of children's lessons, activities and sports.
